Training

GTC has a number of sessions for members focused on swimming, cycling and running taking place throughout the week. We always welcome new members and we have specific sessions for people who are new to swimming (we call them runners or cyclists). Your first session is free and then we ask that you join up.

They are a combination of sessions that are under the guidance of our qualified coaches and more informal, non-coached sessions which are organised by members via the forum.

Each session is aimed to cater for all levels of ability and you are welcome to take part in as few or as many as you wish

MONDAY (summer) – CYCLE FITNESS Meeting place, Ivy India (previously known as Malletsheugh Inn, A77), Ayr Road, Newton MearnsGlasgow G77 6RT, @ 6: 30 – 6:45pm.  This will usually take the form of a 10mile cycle time trial once a month (followed by curry buffet) and intervals or APR’s (Australian Pursuit Racing – if you don’t know what this is, don’t worry – just come along – its fun).

MONDAY (usually middle Monday of month) – RACE FOCUS GROUP 7-9pm,

Throughout the winter this groups will meet at Glasgow High School Kelvinside Sports Club (GHK) Enter GHK from the Glasgow High School entrance on Anniesland Road. The sessions are announced through our ‘Transitions and other sessions’ page:

TUESDAY JUNIORS SESSION 
Glasgow Club Maryhill – 34 Gairbraid Avenue, Glasgow, G20 8YE.  A fun session for 8-15 year olds.  Learn everything there is to know about triathlon from our experienced coaches.  £2.  Parental consent forms must be completed.

6 – 7pm swim

7 – 8pm run (usually outdoors, so please bring warm and reflective clothes)

TUESDAY ADULT SWIM SESSIONS Glasgow Club Maryhill – 34 Gairbraid Avenue, Glasgow, G20 8YE

This year we have introduced a short trail/riverside run before each session, so leaving at 18:15 and 19:15 to get a pre-swim run.

7 – 8pm: This session focuses on lane 1: development/novice, lane 2: improvers, and will concentrate on front crawl technique and fitness covering a distance of around 1.5K – 2k

8 – 9pm: This is for all levels of triathletes, and will concentrate on developing aerobic and anaerobic endurance for triathlon events, covering 1.5K – 3K. Please note that places for each session are limited and will give given on first come, first serve basis.  £3.00 per session (£2:00 students / concessions + 16-18 yrs, U16’s – free, non members £10)

WEDNESDAY SPIN CLASS  (Winter) The Spin class starting on Wednesday 5th November will be at ARC, Glasgow Caledonian University on Cowcaddens Road, opposite Buchanan Bus station. Please be there 6.45 for a 7pm start. Please report to the sport centre reception and pay £4, tell them you are there for the GTC Spin Class, there will also be a sign in sheet at the desk.

If you fancy a warm up run (1 mile) before, meet Alan Kennedy at Surface+ Cafe beside St Georges Cross Underground on Great Western Road and we can plod along and back after, you can leave your bikes etc there too.

THURSDAY RUN SESSION 18:30 for 18:45 departure, Glasgow High School Kelvinside Sports Club (GHK) Enter GHK from the Glasgow High School entrance on Anniesland Road meeting point for run sessions are located in the GHK pavilion past the rugby pitch (large white building with clock on top). Access is through the ground floor door on far side of building facing Crow Road.  £2.00 (£1.50 students / concessions. £1 under 18).

These group running sessions are aimed at development of aerobic endurance and strength during the winter month with sessions grouped into four week blocks. They are open to all abilities and tailored accordingly. Please wear reflective / bright clothing – it’s important that we can be seen on the roads.

THURSDAY RUN SESSION – BEGINNERS AND RETURNERS 18:30 at Bellahouston front door entrance for a skills and introductory (or re-introduction for those making a tentative return to running) session aimed at building your confidence towards completing race distance runs for triathlon. Please wear reflective / bright clothing – it’s important that we can be seen in the park on the paths.

SATURDAY RUGGED RUN SESSION (every 4 weeks or so) A longer, steadier run session. These are advertised on the Forum and Facebook pages.  Usually held in spectacular local hill locations.  Please ensure you wear appropriate clothing and bring food/drinks – you will not be allowed to run with the group without these. Mobile phones are also recommended as something to bring along.

SATURDAY JUNIORS, Maryhill Glasgow Club, 2-4pm.  This is a multi-discipline, mega-fun session aimed at 8-16 year olds.  You will develop skills and fitness and a few things about triathlon!

SUNDAY SWIM SESSIONS Western Baths, Cranworth Street, West End, Glasgow G12

7.30 – 8.30pm – meet at 19:10 in the foyer. This is for all levels of triathletes, and will concentrate on developing aerobic and anaerobic endurance for triathlon events, covering between 1.5K – 3K.

8.30 – 9.30pm – Learners and improvers session – specially designed to suit beginners and to develop your stroke. Please note that places for each session are limited and will give given on first come, first serve basis.  £3.00 (£2:00 for students / concessions + 16-18yrs)

OTHER WEEKEND SESSIONS

There are often other sessions that are arranged at specific times throughout the year, so keep an eye on the Training link and on Facebook for any announcements.  Typical sessions might be transition skills, Brick (that’s bike + run) sessions, swim filming..
