Page 1 of 2 From the forum...So there are quite a few Glasgow Tri people about to do their first IM in the next few weeks so how about some tips from those who have done one before.
Here are mine:
1.The week before: You will feel tired, irritable, grumpy, emotional, unfit, fat, that there is no way you are ready or have done enough training. Don’t worry this just means your taper is working.
2.Check in/race day Write a list now of what you need for S/B/R and so can cross off a simple tick list on the day. Take your own suncream for T1/ T2.
3.Swim: Unless you really hate o/w swim contact start further forward than you would normally seed yourself – you will get a better draft and less congestion
4.Bike: •Slow down!!!! If you are ever out of breath you are going too fast, if you feel any leg burn you are going to fast, if you don’t feel like eating you are going to fast, if you are not being overtaken by everyone in the first 1/3rd of the bike you are going too fast. Don’t worry you will see them ALL again on the run •Take it easy on the uphills. But – power over the crest and PEDAL downhills. Now is not the time to eat, stretch, coast, look at the scenery – you should have done that on the way up. You will make up about 20 spaces for every downhill section and for no energy cost at all. •Eat, eat, eat, eat, especially in the first 2/3rds of the bike, small amounts every 15min but don’t forget! •There WILL be a time on the bike when you think, ‘im tired, I cant be bothered, this is a really, really long way’ but keep plodding along – it WILL get better in 15mins
5.Run •Take your time through aid stations in first ½ of run to get what you need. Listen to your body wants – if thirsty drink, hungry eat. My favourites – banana /water/coke every station •There WILL be a time when you really want to walk. Do not stop! It WILL go away in 15mins. •The 20-30k section. IF you have paced the bike right you will overtake at least 200-300 people over 10k. This is a major major psychological boost. Just keep looking for the next one to get. •Last 10k. Don’t stop for anything! Start skipping aid stations in last 5k. Keep focusing on anything that will keep you moving– lap posts, buildings, people wearing red, next person ahead. This should be the only part of your day that hurts (a lot) but it will be worth it!
6. Most important of all. At all times – remember to keep smiling
