GTC squads

GTC Strategic Coaching Plan

Glasgow Triathlon Club prides itself on being welcoming and inclusive to athletes with a wide range of goals, needs and aspirations. To best serve all of our many members, we operate a squad structure that enables the club to provide the highest quality of coaching.

Three training squads

Members should aim to identify themselves as being part of one of three squads. People can move between squads as their goals change but for the best quality of coaching for all, it’s important that you can place yourself in one of these squads.

Development Squad

This wide-ranging squad welcomes athletes from novice through to experienced.

You will be an athlete who enjoys attending the club sessions, meeting people, participating in training and sometimes enters light-hearted competitions.

You see triathlon as a great way to keep fit and maintain your health and well-being. You may be keen to learn and develop new skills in all disciplines, but equally you may be happy to maintain your current levels of ability.

We anticipate hosting this squad of swimmers across up to 4 x lanes of Social and Development provision.

Note: The Development Swim Squad swimmers will have a Critical Swim Speed (CSS) of over 2min 00s per 100m.

Masters Squad

This squad is for athletes who are focused on making positive changes to their current abilities and who have experience of one (or more) disciplines in triathlon.

You enjoy attending the club sessions, meeting people, participating in training and entering competitions.

You see triathlon as a great way to develop your fitness and maintain your health and well-being. You may be keen to learn and develop new skills in one (or more) disciplines, but equally you may be happy to maintain your current levels of fitness and ability.

Note: For the Masters Swim Squad (upper/middle/lower) your Critical Swim Speed (CSS) needs to be between 1m 44s and 2m 00s per 100m.

This is subject to review and direct advice from your coach. We anticipate hosting this larger squad of swimmers across up to 8 or 9  lanes of Masters provision.

Performance Squad

This squad is for athletes focused on performance and competitive outcomes, as well as experienced athletes.

You enjoy attending club sessions, meeting people, participating in training and entering specific competitions to enable achievement of your goals.

You see triathlon as a great way to challenge your current levels of fitness and to hone your skills in one (or more) disciplines, but equally you may be happy to maintain your current levels of fitness and ability.

Note:  To be part of the Performance Swim Squad your Critical Swim Speed (CSS) needs to be under 1m 44secs per 100m.

This is subject to review and direct advice from your coach. We anticipate hosting this growing squad of swimmers across 5 or 6 lanes of Performance provision.

Which squad suits me?

To identify your squad see Current benchmark swims by time for squad allocation.

Or Current benchmark swims by surname for squad allocation.

See when your swim sessions take place.

In between the squads

There are some swimmers who are just on the cusp of two groups. It is worth discussing this with your coach to establish which squad will currently suit your needs.
If you are unable to attend a swim session in the near future but would like to calculate your Critical Swim Speed there is a SwimTT_200+400 session that you can do on your own.
You can then input your times into the SwimSmooth Calculator, and submit a time to your coach/es and use the information to decide which swim session will suit your ability the best.

But I’m still not sure of my squad

The three squads should not be seen as being restrictive. You may see yourself as completely comfortable in one squad or you might be “between” squads or a “little bit of each”.

For example, some athletes may feel that the club provides a great social environment, but that when it comes to one particular discipline, say swimming, they are more performance-focused.

Alternatively, you may be a fast swimmer and relish the club training sessions, fitting in with the Performance Swim Squad, but don’t have performance goals.

However, for practical reasons in the swimming pool, the squad you swim with is defined by your swim speed. Regular benchmark swimming sessions will provide us with CSS swim speeds for this purpose.

In any circumstance, you can approach your Head Coach, Squad coaches, Swim Squad Coaches and Assistant Squad Coaches to discuss your particular goals or expectations.
