Glasgow Tri Newsletter 71

Dear members,

Got quite a long newsletter for you this week with a range of things to tell you, so do bear with me!

Our first announcement: following low/sporadic attendance for the last couple of years, beginning Thursday 3rd September and for a trial period of one training block of four weeks, both run sessions – the beginners/returners and the session which is usually at GHK will take place from a meeting point at Bellahouston Sports centre. The meeting time will still be 6.30pm for a 6.45pm start. Bellahouston sports centre is easily accessed from M8, M77 and Clyde tunnel and a mere 3 mile cycle from Partick area so no excuses – those of you who have been eager for a southside session should get yourselves along!

Please support Scotlands budding triathletes on Sunday 23 August at Glasgow Triathlon Club’s Autumn Aquathlon at the Allander Sports Centre, Bearsden. We need lots of happy, helpful people to ensure our long established event runs smoothly.  It’s great fun and we usually go for a bike ride and cake stop (obviously!) afterwards. Please email Wendy at if you can give up just a few hours, 8:30am til before noon. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Wendy.

GTC will be running an open water swim sessionfor club members who have not often or never experienced open water swimming. This session will take place from 7-8pm on Wednesday 5th August at the beach at Balloch (west of the outlet village). Parking will be in the public carpark used for the shops/Loch Lomond shores, Treezone etc. Follow the footpaths through the trees to the water edge where the colourful sculpture things are. (Map of location – the beach is just a wee bit north west of the outlet village). The focus of the session will be getting acclimatised to being in a real open water situation and learning the basic skills of open water swimming. You will need a wetsuit, double layer (i.e. TWO) swim caps and googles are mandatory. The session will cost £4 (as an introductory rate) and will be coached by Vicky, Duggie and Rose. Please sign up on the website if you wish to attend.

The club winter training camp is in Lanzarote from 25th February to 3rd March 2016, based at Club La Santa. If you have shown interest or are still to pay the deposit, we will need it done for Thursday 6thAugust. Our yearly camps are a great social event with some serious training; great weather, smooth roads, 50m outdoor pool and we have great sessions planned….oh and the famous La Santa Disco! Alan, Wendy, Elton and Duggie will help guide you through the week, the camp is open to all abilities so ideal for newbies to triathlon too (and you can’t miss Duggie’s Tai Chi class). For more info

If you’re normally an attendee at Nick’s Tuesday evening run session, you will probably be aware that he is still on holiday this week. However, I will be taking a session at the usual time and place (departing Maryhill pool at 6.15pm for an approximately 35 minutes run to return in time for the 7pm swim session) if anyone is interested in coming along. All abilities are welcome, the session will be such that no one will be left behind.

Last thing before I get onto our results – club member Fiona Russell as written an article on the performances of your fellow clubmates at the Outlaw Triathlon. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s on the website.

Mark Cohen was taking part in the Clyde Crossing Swim and was the proud winner of the Tabasco Award for the fastest non-wetsuit swimmer (brrrr, the tabasco must be to heat him back up again!).

Parkrunning at the weekend @ Pollok parkrun were Joanne Hewitt (26:24), Rose McIlwhan (28:38, PB!) and Paul Gallagher ninja-ing along having forgotten his barcode; @ Strathclyde parkrun was Charlotte McClelland, running 27:45; parkrun on tour @ Inverness parkrun was Caroline Findlay, finishing in 28:58; and @ Victoria parkrun were Andrew Cruickshank (22:56) and Tracey Davies (28:05).

That’s all from me folks! Any questions or results, just reply to any of these emails and I’ll get back to you =)

Coach Jo
