Great GTC turn out at Lochore Off-road Triathlon Festival

More than 20 club members competed in one of the few races to take place in the 2020 triathlon season.

Scurry Events played host to the Lochore Off-road Triathlon Festival at Lochore Meadows Country Park in Fife on September 16. Some 160 athletes participated while following the new Covid-19 guidelines.

The event included several multi-sport races: A long and short course triathlon, aquabike and aquathlon.

Among GTC members there were plenty of age group podiums in the off-road long course triathlon (1k/14k/5k), including Mia Padmanabhan, who was first in the youth category and second female overall. Her time of 1:32:41 was just 39 seconds behind the first placed female.

Mum and dad Catriona and Neal also raced. Catriona was second in female 45-49, while Neal was fourth in male 50 to 54.

Neal said: “I really enjoyed the race. I liked the swim format with the Aussie laps. The bike course was quite technical and that suited me. I had the fastest bike leg in my age group and eighth overall so I was really happy with that.

“I had to take the run easy due to an Achilles injury but overall it was a good race. It was sunny, too!”

The Donaldson family also competed, with mum Michelle taking first place in female 50 to 54. Lucy came home first female in the 15 to 16 age category and second female overall in a short course triathlon (500m/7K/3k). Fraser was 4th male in the Tristar 3s race.

Michelle said: “It was a great day. Being able to race alongside the kids was fun and it was amazing to see many fellow club members, all happy to be racing again. “

She described the triathlon as fun but challenging. Michelle said: “After the swim of two 500m loops, with a run along the beach between laps, the mountain bike course was a challenging two loops of a massive climb and descent, with some technical features.  The bike section also had fun trail sections through the trees.

“I thought the run course was on lovely trails. A wee hill climb through deep mud and a herd of cows was rewarded with a beautiful view, then back downhill, through more cows, before running the loch side on to more trails and finally the finish.

“I would recommend this event for other club members next year.”
