The first face-to-face Glasgow Triathlon Club junior group training session took place last week with youngsters – and their parents – clearly delighted to be back together.
The sessions are in accordance with Scottish Government and Triathlon Scotland Covid-19 guidance and comprise 10 juniors and a coach at one time.
On August 17 and 19, two 50-minute back-to-back sessions took place each evening in Victoria Park. There was fifth session at Glasgow Green on Wednesday evening.
Martin Smith brought his daughter, 12-year-old Lilian along to one of the sessions. Martin said: “It was great to get Lilian back to a form of organised activity. She has really missed that structure.
“We have all done the Joe Wicks classes at home but we have struggled to join the club Zoom sessions for various reasons so getting back to an organised activity with the superb GTC coaches was really important.
“It certainly brought a smile to Lilian’s face and she enjoyed being back around her club mates again. Victoria Park is an ideal location for us and with it being a short session it even encouraged me to go for a run while the kids did some real running.”
Lilian, who has been with GTC for several years, said: “It was really enjoyable to be back doing something that I love. It was great to have something to look forward to that got me out of the house and meant I wasn’t just sitting around.
“I had fun and it made me feel good about myself. I liked seeing everyone again.”
Julie Calvert took her children Morvern and Elliot Smith along to one of the first sessions since lockdown.
She said: “They were happy to be back to training but they found it hard. We struggled to get exercise early in lockdown because our streets were so busy, so it’s taken us a while to think about exercise again.
“They have missed the routine and being part of a club. Although there were club Zoom training sessions during lockdown, my kids didn’t like doing the on-line sessions so they didn’t join them. So, it was lovely to see them them out training again.”
More demand – and new sessions
A pilot run-and-bike session at Mugdock Country Park on Saturday showed there is a big demand for similar training for the juniors.
Billy Mitchell, Head coach (Youths & Juniors), reported: “Following strong demand for places at the Mugdock run-and-bike session, we are offering the same again and another pilot session at Pollock Park.”
The next junior run-and-bike session at Mugdock is on August 29 from 2pm to 4pm, with 20 places available and split into two squads of 10.
At the same time on the same day at Pollock Park, there will be a session for up to 10 children.
This is a mountain bike-based session and youngsters must be competent riders, on well-maintained bikes and with water bottles.
The meeting place will be emailed to all who sign up. Sessions will open on the GTC booking system soon.
