Just a wee post-Christmas, pre-New Year ‘hey there, hi there, hello there’ to give you a heads up about some race results and New Year’s Day antics.
For those of you new to the club, the past few years has seen a very special GTC event take place on New Year’s Day. It is affectionately known as the Christmas Tree APR. Simplified, an APR (or Australian pursuit race) is a handicapped race, where the slowest rider starts first and fastest rider last. In this case, the race begins in Lennoxtown and proceeds up The Crow until you reach the Christmas tree. Don’t be fooled though, the tree is actually slightly beyond the top of the hill and on the way back down to Fintry so don’t rest once the road stops going up or you may get caught! The tree in question was decorated by unknown persons a few years ago and earned sufficient amusement to result in the Christmas Tree APR event. The plan is to meet at the Kirkhouse Inn in Strathblane at 11am for a gentle ride along to Lennoxtown for the APR.
As an alternative activity, parkruns across the country will be running special events on New Year’s Day, including the Glasgow Parkrun double header – Tollcross and Strathclyde parkruns have teamed up and timed their events to allow you to run both! Strathclyde parkrun is on at 9am and Tollcross at 11am, allowing you time to run then travel between the two events.
For some reason my consolidated parkrun report is still not working, so here is the results I have collated from searching manually:
On 20th Dec, Tom McGuinness was parkrunning @ Pollok, finishing in 20:32; John Kinsella and Fiona Scotter were running @ Victoria Park, finishing in 21:51 and 23:53 respectively.
Several members were parkrunning on Christmas day, including Fiona Scotter @ Eastleigh, running 26:46; Laurie Shedden @ Ayr, running 25:32; and Nick Vaughan and Ray Loughran @ Pollok, running 25:58 and 26:02; Jo Hewitt was running @ Camperdown in Dundee, finishing in 25:48. Apologies to anyone missed out, I didn’t search every single parkrun, just the ones I knew were doing it!
Several members were also racing at the Ayr Turkey Trot 10km on Boxing day, including Ian Hannah, Doug Manning, Emma Kay and Laurie Shedden (two races in two days!). Their times were 38:51, 41:41, 41:45 and 51:39 respectively.
Happy training, racing and happy new year!
