Member’s Digest #45

Dear members,

If you’re a shiny new member for 2015, welcome to Glasgow Triathlon Club! I’m Jo, one of the coaches and race committee member and I send out a newsletter roughly once a week including general club news, upcoming events/training sessions which are going on as well as any race results from the previous weekend. Let us begin with another reminder about next week’s AGM: the club AGM will be in the function room above the bar at GHK on Monday 26th of January at 7.30pm. Don’t forget to bring along your baked goods and any unwanted/un-needed triathlon gear for potential buyers/swappers! On a helping-out-the-club note, please also get your names sent to Wendy for volunteering at the club’s spring junior aquathlon on Sunday 22nd March. Volunteers will be required between 8.30 and 11am, no experience required and usually people head out for runs or cycles from the Allander afterwards. Email Wendy at if you can help out.

The GTC coaches will be running another group riding skills session on Saturday 7th of February at Bellahouston cycle track in Bellahouston park. The session will run from 1.30 to 3.30pm for £3 paid on the day. The session will cover a range of things from calls and hand signals to group skills and etiquette. Please dress warmly as there will be some standing whilst things are explained and bring a bike in working order (don’t forget a helmet!). This session is for members only.

This year we are taking part in the British Long Distance Swimming Association postal swim – the idea of this is to swim as far as you can in one hour. We will be running this on Sunday nights at the 8.30-9.30pm session. Due to the popularity of the beginners/improvers session we can only provide one lane (space for 8 swimmers) so if you wish to take part in the postal swim you will need to sign up in advance on the website. You will find the relevant post under the ‘swimming’ section of the training tab.

A few more races have opened their entries in the last week. Many Scottish races fill rapidly so get your entries in if you fancy doing any of them! These races include:
21/03/2015 Tranent Sprint Triathlon (pool swim) 750m/20km/5km
19/04/2015 Ayr ‘3 Castles’ Duathlon (also Scottish Students Duathlon Champs) 5km/27km/5km (entries also available as a 2 person relay)
28/06/2015 Ayr Open Water Sprint Triathlon 750m/20km/5km

A few people were out racing this weekend. Let’s begin with Hannah Kemlo, who was representin’ at the Strathpuffer 24 hr mountain bike race. Hannah has done this race the last 4 years in a row, the first two years as part of a quad team, last year as a pair and this year as a full solo effort. The idea is to complete as many laps of the course (approx. 11km?) in 24hrs as you can. Hannah completed 13 laps before retiring after 21:11:41, coming 4th female and 45thout of 92.

Also racing this weekend were Jim Elliott, Rose McIlwhan and Paul and Susan Gallagher at the Bowhill offroad duathlon. Jim finished in 2:00:11, Rose (completing the run session entirely on crutches) finished in 2:10:02 and Paul and Susan Gallagher, competing as a relay team, finished in 1:32:38. Several members were taking part in the Rouken Glen Cyclocross, including Elizabeth Adams as fourth lady and Gregor Stewart fourth overall, also posting the fastest single lap of the race. Christine Little was taking part in one of the Foxlake trail series events, this one a 20km run from Lochhouses, I tried to find the results but was not successful.

On that note, if you’re doing any races, be sure to send me in your result, I can’t check all results for all races 😉

Finally, parkrunning at the weekend were Nick Vaughan @ Pollok parkrun, finishing in 26:33 and Laurie Shedden (quite the parkrun regular, her next parkrun will take her to the big 50 parkruns total!) @ Tollcross, finishing in 28:05.
