New junior captains at Glasgow Triathlon Club

The new GTC Junior captains have been announced as Amiya Patel and Charlie Treharne. Here, in their own words, they speak about their new roles for the club.

Female junior captain: Amiya Patel

I am your new female captain for 2021. I have been in the Triathlon Club since I was nine. GTC has always had such an encouraging atmosphere and everyone motivates each other to improve.

As a captain, I would like to offer my help and guidance and for you to be able to ask me any questions, that you may not feel comfortable asking the coaches. We are here to support and guide you through any problems or queries you have.

With our current lockdown situation, home training can be very hard. It can be hard to get motivated with the uncertainty around future competitions.

Personally, individual training can sometimes feel like a bit of a chore. However, the satisfaction of achieving and enjoying my sessions, outweighs the downsides.

As you know there are lots of opportunities available for you in GTC, via Zoom, and hopefully we will be back training together soon.

No one really knows what triathlon opportunities are going to be this year, which can sometimes making it feel like “what’s the point?” Nevertheless, I think everyone’s main focus should be to stay motivated and keep at it.

Most importantly, enjoy your sport because in the end, that’s the thing that truly matters. If you ever have any questions, please contact me.

Male junior captain: Charlie Treharne

I have been in the tri club since I was eight, which is over six years, and I have made a lot of new friends during that time. From being a complete beginner, I have improved a lot in all disciplines and I have taken part in lots of races all over Scotland and even some down in England. 

Even though the club has grown quickly, everyone is involved and can easily make friends. It’s also great fun at races when club members all cheer each other on.

As the male captain, I hope to help other members with keeping motivated, getting involved and giving training advice. I want to make sure that everyone feels part of the club.

Lockdown has been tough for everyone, but it is still good to keep your training going. I have been doing around four bikes and three runs per week, with strength and conditioning most days. I’ve also started doing Zwift races, which is a great way to keep racing during lockdown.

We should be getting back to group training soon, which is great as everyone is probably a bit demotivated and it would be great for everybody to see each other again. I find that I am a lot more motivated when training with others.

Although we are not sure when races will be starting again, I hope to keep motivated and training until races are back so I can have a chance of going to the Youth Super Series. I am also looking forward to some friendly GTC races.
