A group of enthusiastic juniors headed to Leeds at the weekend to race as part of the AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Leeds. The event played host to both elite races, including the AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series, Leeds, and the AJ Bell World Triathlon Para Series, Leeds, as well as a number of amateur races.
Elite winners were Britain’s Alex Yee and Maya Kingma, of The Netherlands. Glasgow triathlete
Beth Potter was seventh.
Our GTC members clearly enjoyed the day – and the chance to return to racing after more than a year of Covid lockdown restrictions.
Jennifer Laskey, who was there with her sons Ruari and Finlay, said: “It was a great day at Leeds with GTC well represented and some really strong performances.
“Unfortunately, Ruari had a bit of a technical issue on his bike so DNF’d but enjoyed himself anyway and had a great swim. Finlay did great for his first open water triathlon.”
Steve Burnett, who was at the race with his daughter Erin, said: “It was great experience for the kids and Erin really enjoyed it.
“Erin hasn’t had a lot of open water experience and still gets scared sometimes. Unfortunately, Leeds was one of those days and Erin didn’t have a good swim and, as a result, she came out quite far back in the field by TS1.
“She did an amazing job and fought back to eighth in the girls’ race, which is a great result with lots of very talented young athletes.”
Neal Padmanabhan also attended the event with two of his daughters, Mia and Nina. He said: “The first race in ages was against a top quality field, with lots of academy athletes in the older age groups.
“It was a really tough course with over 1km to run just in transition and a hilly technical bike and run route.
“Mia was delighted with eighth overall and fourth junior in the open sprint – she missed third by 14 seconds. Nina finished her first race after her broken leg last year.”
